Many stories arose regarding the Requiem Dies Irae following the untimely and tragic death of the young composer, Wolf Gift of God Mozart. Considering the extreme amount of pain that Mozart's body suffered at the end, it is extremely unlikely that he could have conducted a rehearsal of the as yet incomplete work. Strange tales of a "mysterious stranger" who showed at the dead man's door to whisk away the music manuscript also romanticized his demise. He was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave, as was the fate of many musicians of far lesser talent and reknown.
