Myth and Poetry

In each issue of Mythic Passages, Michael Karlin points you to some of his favorite poems published on the World Wide Web. This month's poems come from Stephen Dunn. Bob Hicok, and David Whyte.

Stephen Dunn
Sisyphus and Sudden Lightness
From Local Visitations

Stephen Dunn has published twelve collections of poetry including Local Visitations, Different Hours (winner of the Pulitzer Prize, 2000); Loosestrife (National Book Critics Circle finalist, 1996); New and Selected Poems, 1974-1994; Landscape at the End of the Century; and Between Angels. He is also the author of Riffs and Reciprocities: Prose Pairs and Walking Light: Essays and Memoirs. 

In 1995, Dunn received an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Among his other awards are the Levinson Award from Poetry magazine and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. He divides his time between Frostburg, Maryland, and Pomona, New Jersey, where he is Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at Richard Stockton College. 

Bob Hicok
Season of Levitation
From Animal Soul

Bob Hicok's poetry has appeared in such magazines as The New Yorker, Ploughshares, and Poetry, as well as twice appearing in the Best American Poetry and Pushcart anthologies. An NEA Fellow, Hicok is the author of two previous collections of poems. His second book, The Legend of Light, won the 1995 Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry and was an ALA Booklist Notable Book of the Year. He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

David Whyte
The Well of Grief
From Where Many Rivers Meet

Poet David Whyte grew up among the hills and valleys of Yorkshire, England. The author of four books of poetry, he is one of the few poets to take his perspectives on creativity into the field of organizational development, where he works with many American and international companies. He holds a degree in Marine Zoology, and has traveled extensively, including working as a naturalist guide and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions. 

In addition to his four volumes of poetry, David Whyte is the author of The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America, published by Doubleday/Currency, an audio cassette lecture series, and an album of poetry and music. His new book of prose, Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as Pilgrimage of Identity was published by Riverhead Books in March, 2001. He lives with his family in the Pacific Northwest.
